Korea’s first 1200k ‘Grand Randonnee’ - 한국 최초 1200K 그랜드 랜도니

Leaving Cheonan, Randonneurs will head southwest to the Geum River (Geumgang) and then on to the port city of Gunsan at the west sea (Seohae).  From here riders will head south and enter territory familiar to those who rode the 1000k in April 2011.  We will cross the stunning 32km Saemangeum seawall before reaching Heungdeuk.  Riders will continue south along the seashore to enjoy a stunning sunset over the west sea.  By the time we reach Dolmeori Beach we will ride under the stars and hopefully have a tailwind.  From the control in Hampyeong Randonneurs will continue riding south on to the fishing harbor of Ttangkkeut (end of land), the most southern point of the 1200k.  Fast riders will enjoy the sunrise and a hot Nakji breakfast.  After 420km in the saddle Ttangkkeut is a perfect place to check into a 24h sauna or Yeogwan to get some rest.  From Ttangkkeut Randonneurs will take the reverse route of the 600K (2011) and cycle past Gangjin to our next control in the small picturesque fishing harbor Maryang.  After a delicious seafood lunch, riders will continue to Yulpo, a popular seaside resort.  During the second night the south sea will be to our left and riders will pass through Gwangyang into mountainous terrain.  Under the cover of night we riders will turn north to Danseong, a small town with many Yeogwans.  On day three riders will continue heading north through the “green heart” of Korea passing Hapcheon and Goryeong before reaching Bongyang.  The owner of the control also owns a Yeogwan, and this could be another convenient sleep stop.  From Bongyang to Chungju we will follow the SBS route, liked by many riders.  From Chungju riders will turn west and return to Cheonan

Start: May 26, 2012, 05:00; Cheonan Bus Terminal; Distance: 1240km; Elevation gain: 9,000m; time limit: 90 hours

As all Brevets run by “Korea Randonneurs”, this ride will be self-supported.  In order to participate in this 1200k event, riders need to qualify by successfully completing an entire Brevet series (200k, 300k, 400k and 600k) before May 25, 2012.  Riders, who successfully completed a 1000k or 1200k in 2011, are automatically qualified.
